Xavier Bartlett’s mistake helped Kolkata Knight Riders earn five runs in the ongoing IPL 2025. However, the defending champions suffered a 16-run loss to Punjab in Mullanpur. Chahal was adjudged Player of the Match for his four-wicket haul.
Kolkata Knight Riders were handed five runs during their chase against Punjab Kings in the ongoing IPL 2025. The incident happened in the eighth over of the game when Venkatesh Iyer played it towards the backward square leg where debutant Xavier Bartlett was stationed. The Australia international collected the ball quite comfortably but while throwing it to the keeper, the ball slipped his hands and reached the boundary.
KKR were interestingly awarded five runs for it. The reason behind that remains simple – the fielder collected the ball without any hesitation but instead of throwing it to the keeper, it slipped and reached the fence. According to the rule, it was considered an overthrow. Venkatesh and Angkrish Raghuvanshi completed a single and hence, the on-fielder umpire awarded them five runs – one for the single and four overthrows.
KKR suffer embarrassing defeat to Punjab
KKR were cruising for a famous win in Mullanpur but a poor batting display cost them the match. Chasing only 112 runs, openers Sunil Narine and Quinton de Kock departed early, scoring five and two runs respectively. Nevertheless, captain Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi took control of the situation and stitched an important partnership of 55 runs.
It stabilized KKR’s momentum but Rahane’s dismissal changed everything. In the eighth over of the match, the KKR captain departed for 17 runs, but interestingly, the replay showed he was not out. The veteran however didn’t opt for a review and it helped PBKS stage a historic comeback. Skipper Shreyas Iyer introduced Yuzvendra Chahal and the leg-spinner changed the game for them.
Chahal clinched four wickets and registered one of his best spells in IPL history to win it for Punjab. KKR batters looked clueless in the middle after a while as wickets fell like a house of cards. PBKS won the match by 16 runs and moved to number four on the points table.
